The Spanish enclave of Melilla sits in northern Morocco, making headlines for the deadly border fence that externalizes European territorial controls into North Africa. This film event starts with a screening of the powerful documentary, Les Sauteurs (Those Who Jump), shot by Abou Bakar Sidibé, a Malian migrant trying to make his way across after ceaseless attempts. The New School’s Miriam Ticktin, Professor at the Anthropology Department, and Richard Peña, Professor of Professional Practice in Film at Columbia University and Director of the New York Film Festival (1988-2012), join us in  an audience discussion on the cultural politics of the film and questions of borders and humanitarianism.
This is a collaborative event between Columbia’s Global Centers  and the Zolberg Institute for the performance and film series, pictures in motion. of motion. for motion. Refreshments will be provided!
