A Climate Dimension: Practical Steps for International Protection Claims

Led by Emily Rowe, Chair of the Climate Emergency Working Group at Refugee Legal Support. The panel brought Yumna Kamel, co-founder and Executive Director of the legal think tank Earth Refuge, joint initiator of the Climiglaw database, and Senior Legal Education Officer at Right to Remain; Maureen Okoth, Regional Litigator for Africa at the Global Strategic Litigation Council and joint initiator of the Climiglaw Database; Adam Jones, practicing solicitor at the United Kingdom’s Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants’ (JCWI) Climate Justice is Migrant Justice Project; Ama Francis, Climate Director at the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) and Non-Resident Fellow at the Sabin Center for Climate Change Law at Columbia University; Gabriela Nagle-Alverio, Team Member of the International School on Climate Mobilities, PhD candidate and Editor in Chief of the Duke Law Journal; Kostas Vlachopoulos, researcher for the Greek Refugee Council and writer of the recent report: Addressing climate induced massive migration before it happens. This panel discussion and Q&A will raise awareness about the practical steps being taken to protect those seeking international protection with a climate dimension to their claim. It will also provide information about the individual and collective efforts civil society can join to advance the rights of those displaced by climate change.
