The Zolberg Institute on Migration and Mobility and the Department of Sociology at The New School invite you to the pre-book launch event of Radical Skin/Moderate Masks by Yassir Morsi, an Australia-based race critical scholar, followed by a discussion with Arun Kundnani.
Yassir Morsi’s book is described by Gil Anidjar as a ‘remarkable auto-ethnography [that] takes upon itself the impossible task of correcting “the ugly image of a violent Islam”… This is an urgent and welcoming book, a powerful and exemplary iteration of the imperative to “know thyself.”’
Morsi will speak about the book and his unique theorization of the many usages of the ‘moderate Muslim’ in our times. Arun Kundnani, scholar-in-residence at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture and author of The Muslims are Coming (Verso 2015) will give a response.
The evening will also launch the Rowman and Littlefield International book series, Challenging Migration Studies (edited by Alana Lentin and Gavan Titley), of which Morsi’s Radical Skin/Moderate Masks is the first volume.
Alana Lentin who is currently the Hans Speier Visiting Professor of Sociology at the New School for Social Research will briefly present the series and introduce Yassir Morsi.
The book will be out in June 2017.
This event is part of the Citizenship in Movement Working Group. The event is free and open to the public; no tickets or RSVP required.
