The New School for Social Research, Politics, MA, 2026
Feiyu was born in China and moved to the United States at the age of 18. He holds both a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in Operations Research and Information Engineering from Cornell University (2018), with a focus on data analytics. His Master’s project involved using machine learning algorithms to design a more intuitive user interface for a major U.S. home appliance company’s online store. After graduation, Feiyu worked as a Technology Consultant at Deloitte Consulting in New York City for six years, where he supported public- and private-sector clients in improving operational efficiency and deploying advanced technology solutions. During his time at Deloitte, he assisted various U.S. state governments in upgrading their IT infrastructure and contributed to humanitarian relief initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic. He also served as a Project or Product Manager on large-scale technology projects. In Fall 2024, Feiyu began his Master’s studies at The New School, pursuing an MA in Politics. His research focuses on global governance of emerging technologies such as AI, and on safeguarding human rights against the misuse of technology.
As the Crisis Response, Recovery and Development Machine Learning Fellow, Feiyu will support the Global Practice Lead for Technology in Programs to leverage service-based data and derive insights that advance various IRC programs across the areas of education, economic recovery, protection, and health. He will define critical questions with teams, source internal and complementary datasets, determine appropriate algorithms, design and train machine learning models, and translate model outputs into actionable insights for stakeholders. Feiyu will have the opportunity to apply machine learning techniques to solve real-world problems in humanitarian settings, working with data that presents unique biases and ethical considerations, while also developing responsible AI practices.
