Rowan MacLachlan

Julien J. Studley Graduate Programs in International Affairs, MA, 2026

Rowan holds a BA in Governance, Leadership and Ethics from Huron at the University of Western Ontario (2018–2022), he also attended Örebro University in Sweden where he studied Political Science (2023). His undergraduate research focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, creating and presenting a report to his university on the strategic implementation of inclusionary policy. Rowan was previously employed at Daisy Group, a government and public relations firm in Toronto, Canada, where his work centred around writing news articles, political research and strategic advisory campaigns while working with political and community leaders, cities and First Nations communities. At the New School, Rowan is currently pursuing an MA in International Affairs and plans to focus on global development, expanding upon his interests in global governance, AI ethics and increasing international collaboration to solve large-scale issues.

As the AI Perceptions Research Fellow, Rowan will support a project focused on the social perceptions and implications of AI-based tools used by healthcare workers for mpox detection in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Burundi. This will involve conducting a literature review on healthcare providers’ interactions with AI technologies in low- and middle-income countries and low-resource settings, focused on the use of AI tools by minority language speakers and other marginalized groups. Rowan will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of public health experts, medical professionals, and local partners, to help inform the IRC’s understanding of the accessibility and effectiveness of AI tools in regions with limited healthcare infrastructure and digital literacy.
